NO CREDIBLE LINK BETWEEN ELEVATED ATMOSPHERIC HFC-23 LEVELS AND UPTAKE OF HFO-1234ZE

188_N1

A recent paper [1] by Hansen has proposed that R-23 is formed as a minor product in yields of 11.0 ± 5.5 % from atmospheric photolysis of trifluoroacetaldehyde (CF3CHO) in the troposphere. Trifluoroacetaldehyde is an intermediate atmospheric breakdown product from HFOs and HCFOs that contain the CF3CH= group (this would exclude HFO-1234yf).  The paper…

ATMOSPHERIC BREAKDOWN PRODUCTS OF HFCs AND HFOs- Relevant data omitted from ECOS report

  188_N2

In its briefing, publicised at the May F-gas stakeholders meeting, ECOS [1] discussed the life cycle impact of refrigerants, and specifically, the additional impact of the degradation that refrigerants undergo once emitted into the atmosphere. There are some highly relevant publicly available data that has been omitted from the ECOS briefing.

EFCTC COMMENT ON UBA REPORT ON FLUORINATED REFRIGERANTS EMISSIONS AND DRINKING WATER QUALITY

Hand Holds Glass shutterstock_726027745

The UBA press release “trifluoracetic acid from fluorinated refrigerants contaminates rainwater” [1] provides no information on the levels of TFA in rainwater, the forecast levels due to continued use of fluorinated refrigerants and how they relate to the UBA drinking water health guidance value of 60 μg/L and a target value of 10 μg/L.  The…

2020: HFCs CONTRIBUTE 1.13% TO CLIMATE WARMING INFLUENCE OF GREENHOUSE GASES

  OZONE-DEPLETING-SUBSTANCES Earth

The US NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has released its 2020 update of the AGGI (Annual Greenhouse Gas Index), which follows the evolution of the radiative forcing (ability of all greenhouse gases to trap heat) since the onset of the industrial revolution. The HFC impact in 2020 is now 1.13% of the total…
