Dear subscriber,

In this EFCTC September newsletter, we report on F-gas proposal concerns raised by trade associations representing refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump industries. We summarise two papers on the measurement of longer chain PFAS acids in the environment, explain, in this item, that there are already extensive studies on Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and provide a link to a new short leaflet TFA: what is it, how much is formed from F-gases, and what are its environmental effects.

We cover a pioneering project at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, using a HCFO-1233zd heat pump for urban district heating, on the way to decarbonizing heat. We cover the increased availability of refrigeration systems, designed for F-gas refrigerants with GWPs less than 150, for in a wide range of applications, including cold rooms, petrol stations and convenience stores. We also discuss that the ozone layer recovery has reached a half-way milestone, and that there is no ozone hole in the tropics even though such a hole was widely reported.

Interested in EFCTC’s list of upcoming events relating to fluorocarbons? You can find them listed at the bottom of the newsletter and on the fluorocarbons.org website.

Thank you for your continued interest in EFCTC.

F-GAS PROPOSAL REVIEW

F-gas proposal concerns continue to generate trade association responses

Zen,Balancing,Rocks,O,A,Deck,,New,Zealand

Following the trade association responses with initial concerns about the Commission F-gas proposal, including the joint statement from AREA, EHPA, and EPEE (see EFCTC May newsletter), more detailed positions and responses have been issued by trade associations representing large parts of the RACHP industry. These trade associations (EPEE, Sneffca, AFCE, AFF,…

Measurement of longer chain PFAS in rainfall, surface water, soil and the Antarctic

The measurement and quantification of PFAS in the environment is critical to understanding their potential environmental and health effects. While there are already extensive studies on Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) which is highly relevant to the use and emissions of some HFCs and HFOs, two recent papers have reported on the measurement…

HCFO-1233zd high-temperature heat pump used for district heating in Berlin

The project aims to prove that it is possible to use large-scale heat pumps for urban district heating in a way that not only helps to achieve Berlin’s net zero goal by 2050 but can also make economic sense. The high-temperature heat pump uses HCFO-1233zd, according to Cooling Post, to efficiently utilize waste heat, which…

Condensing Units for full range of A2L refrigerants, including ultra-low GWP R1234ze/yf, and lower GWP R455A and R454C

The condensing units, from a German manufacture, offer end users a future-proof solution since all these refrigerants, R1234ze/yf, and lower GWP R455A and R454C, have GWPs below 150, the critical threshold under the F-Gas Regulation.

The units are designed for use in…

OZONE LAYER

Ozone Layer recovery reaches half-way milestone, and no ozone hole in the tropics

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists have announced that in early 2022, the overall concentration of ozone-depleting substances in the mid-latitude stratosphere had fallen just over 50 percent on the path back to levels observed in 1980, before ozone depletion was significant. And the very…
